What’s rarer than the Blue Moon?

With Autumn Equinox on September 22nd, 2013, our interest has peaked to the sky. It’s Harvest at ARO Pistachios which begs the question: When is Harvest Moon and what exactly distinguishes it among the other moons? The Blue Moon sounds supernatural.   Our research points to the modern definition of Blue Moon as the second full moon occurring in one calendar month. Due to the lunar 28-day schedule and our calendar system which includes instances of days extending beyond in a month such as 29th, 30th, and 31st, it is regular and expected for this astronomical schedule. Although considered rare, the last

Hot Days Trigger Early Pistachio Harvest 2013

California’s pistachio nut harvest began early, in late August rather than after Labor Day as experienced in recent years. Extremely hot summer days of 100°F have resulted in a high percentage of split nuts on the branch. Accordingly, this has also yielded smaller nuts of many varieties state-wide; the Kalegoochi variety, however, remains large and “colossal” at Orandi Ranch.       As predicted by the Farmer’s Almanac, August temperatures were “scorching” at Orandi Ranch situated in Terra Bella and continued to rise throughout the San Joaquin Valley. The extremely arid, high desert climate of this zone creates the most

Summer Solstice: Summer Dawn in the Orchards

Welcome Summer Solstice! It is most definitely an Emerald Green year!     The longer days and higher temperatures push pistachio trees’ demand for water and nutrients. At Orandi Ranch our work begins early in the morning as we have entered the most critical growing stage of the season: nut clusters have “set” and are developing into full pistachios. Although June 21st marks the first day of Summer, Harvest—which begins in late August/early September—will arrive in the blink of an eye.     To meet and sustain the water needs for pistachio trees, ARO Pistachios has drilled a well 1,200 feet

Pistachios: Love is in the Air

Known as The Love Nut for its heart healthy and aphrodisiac properties, it’s no wonder pistachios attract Cupid’s magic in the orchards. Male and female trees at Orandi Ranch eagerly await Spring when new buds will be visible.     In Greek mythology Eros, known as Cupid—the son of Venus and Aphrodite—with his bow and magic-tipped arrow is an iconic association with Valentine’s Day. Early celebrations may have evolved from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which celebrated Spring and fertility pairing young men and women together for one year. At ARO Pistachios, Inc., our pairing is Himalayan Pink Salt

Chilling Hours

It’s COLD. But our trees love it—why??? In order to bear fruit in a growing season, pistachio trees require a minimum of 400 hours of weather 42f degrees or cooler. This triggers the trees to become dormant which “resets” their annual growing cycle. When weather and climate do not provide sufficient Chilling Hours, instead of bearing fruit, pistachio trees exemplify vegetative energy. Based on the weather experienced thus far since harvest, ARO Pistachios, Inc. anticipates a forthcoming bountiful growing season!
