Gary Erickson was at mile 120 of a 175 mile bicycle ride in 1986. Gary had packed energy bars, but found the usual energy bar sticky, hard to digest and tasteless. Returning to his mother’s Emeryville, Calif. kitchen, Gary created an energy bar that tasted great and used only all-natural ingredients. The bar was named Kali’s Bar but was renamed in honor of Gary’s Father, Clifford.
In May the 20th Anniverary Clif Bar will be released. There are 23 ingredients in the bar including pears, figs, pistachios and cloves, many of which are present in the traditional Italian panforte recipe.
