Pollination Popping in the Pistachio Orchards

April is popping with buds and leaves and wind swirling for healthy pollination. Although surviving with minimal rain, pistachio trees are still vibrant and healthy in the orchards this Spring. Bud break and leafing out are evident everywhere. The scene at ARO Pistachios looks promising and more showers in Central Valley are welcome.

(Above detail.) First week of April development.

(Below detail.) A mere week earlier in late March, buds were formed and leaves were only preparing to leaf out.

As of early April, the pollination window is closing. The trees' demand for nutrients increases dramatically. Similar to 2014 crop, pollination was sporadic and slightly irregular, and out of sync. We won't begin to know the extent of the pollination irregularities til June when nut fill begins.
